Baba Tjeko

Baba Tjeko is a South African Artist and Designer who is commonly known for his abstract geometric work that is both traditional and contemporary. His work is about the beautiful and dignified representation of black people who live in the periphery of urban spaces. A gentle reminder that cultural roots and identity can be found in areas and people that are generally considered uneducated and uncivilised. He seeks to acknowledge their big role in preserving the essence of African culture and identity.

Baba’s work comprises of symbolic and vibrant color palette that is both aesthetically pleasing and nostalgic. This signature aesthetic is inspired by the Basotho wall mural called Litema, a disappearing artform that was practiced by women in Lesotho and his home province of Free State in South Africa. Although this artistic style has captured the hearts of local and international collectors, Baba is a layered Artist who uses multiple visual styles to express his ideas and thoughts. To him, the energy that the work carries is more important than style.

Through this work, the artist calls the viewer to not only marvel at the beauty of color and brilliantly-designed forms but he also encourages them to evaluate the importance of traditional culture in relation to black identity in this contemporary era. Baba Tjeko lives and works in Parys, Gauteng.
